Housing Specification

It is important that there is a detailed housing specification if an application is to be made for grant funding:

  • This should be a summary of both the essential and desirable characteristics of the property the person wants to buy. It will cover the type of property required and other factors relating to location.
  • It is very important the essential requirements are backed by an occupational therapist's assessment of the person's housing need. The occupational therapist's assessment may also identify desirable requirements. However, desirable requirements may also be things identified by the person. The desirable requirements identified by the person should be realistic and rational in relation to what housing is likely to be available and the resources the person is likely to have.
  • A housing specification is useful where it is likely the person will be buying an existing property. It can form part of an application for grant funding and will guide the person when trying to identify potential property.
  • If the person is considering new build, a housing specification can form part of an application for grant funding and a brief for a technical consultant or architect.
